January 2011
Greetings and welcome to the Not As I Pictured film community. Our monthly newsletter will keep you up to date on the humanitarian goals of our free cancer education film project..

You already know that anyone touched by cancer can receive our free film DVD and cancer coping companion guide, with free shipping, too. That includes patients, caregivers, survivors, physicians, nurses and medical professionals. As so many of you are telling us, Not As I Pictured is truly making a difference through support, strength, and renewed courage to patients and their loved ones.

Our goal is to give away more than 10,000 free copies of the film. Thanks to you, we’re already on our way! So many cancers are today beginning to be looked at as chronic illness, rather than death sentences. Not As I Pictured is upbeat and inspiring. None of us asked for this; the film empowers viewers to believe they can return to health and the joy of everyday.

Behind the scenes, the last year and a half has been spent preparing our program for launch, beginning with pilot program endorsed by leading cancer care experts, and now onto free national DVD distribution.

In March, we plan to begin our national media campaign, so if you have strong television, radio, newspaper and magazine contacts for us, in advance, we thank you for your suggestions and letting media organizations know about our unique program.

Why give away the film?
Many far wiser than me have advised that I should sell the film for $25 or $30 a copy. But during my treatment, we received so much wonderful help along the way, often from strangers. By giving away the film, I’m determined to give some of that back.

Of course, we do hope that when doctors, nurses, and survivorship experts view their free copies, seeing first hand the uplifting and motivating power of the film, that they will encourage their institutions and libraries to buy copies. That helps keep our free program for personal use alive.

Please pass the word about our program. We also have terrific education materials online in collaboration with the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) and Cancer.Net. At the website, viewers can see a two minute trailer, and visit the Not As I Pictured store for free film copies, or to purchase t-shirts, and posters.

New program for organizations in need
We do typically need to charge for library and organization versions of the film. Hospitals and medical practices are now using Not As I Pictured to help survivorship programs, support groups, and new patients. Yet we realize this remains a challenging time financially for many publicly funded organizations and non-profits.

Thus, we are pleased to announce a new charity waiver program for libraries and organizations that cannot afford the regular license price.

We pledge not to turn away any group or organization that needs the film, or wants to help spread the word about the positive impact that Not As I Pictured is already having across the U.S.

The application fee waiver process to receive a free or reduced free copy is simple.

Please help patients and caregivers in any way you can, even a simple gesture like picking up quick dinner for a family affected by cancer can make an important impact. There is no obligation to donate!

You can also help by scheduling a community or group showing of Not As I Pictured in your area. Screenings are often followed by community cancer care roundtable discussions that are proving to be meaningful for our audiences. If needed, we also have grant subsidies that can help make this easily affordable. We also have an accompanying photographic exhibition that some communities show in conjunction with a screening.

Although we are just now launching, I’m happy to report that the film has been met with great enthusiasm within the cancer care community, and we have already screened or scheduled in 10 states and two countries. We hope yours will be next!

Please also urge your local community or University library to add Not As I Pictured to its collection.
