FROM DIRECTOR JOHN KAPLAN

Spring 2011
Hello everyone! Welcome to our Spring newsletter for the Not As I Pictured film community. Our monthly newsletter keeps you up to date on the humanitarian goals of our free cancer education film project.

Our free DVDs and accompanying cancer coping guides are flying out the door! With our goal of giving away 10,000 free copies of the film, we're already 14% there!

We're also building an amazing community at Facebook, and encourage you to join us, read the film comments there, and please share your own:

Here' s a great comment shared by viewer Denise Itzkowitz: "I want to thank you for this video you sent me. At first I was a bit scared to watch, but right away I realized how uplifting and positive it is. You did a wonderful job and I am highly recommending it!"

April events
We have a whirlwind month ahead with screenings at two universities, Kent State, and my alma mater, Ohio University. Then it's off to Wilmington, Delaware where we'll do a community screening in conjunction with a cancer coping roundtable forum. Local cancer experts will be on hand to lend advice and encouragement.

If you would like to line up a screening in your community, please contact us. Local oncologists, survivorship experts, and advocacy organization leaders are always willing to lend a hand for a truly meaningful event.
Bring Not As I Pictured to your community.

Letting others know about the program
Thanks for helping us get the word out. Not As I Pictured is making a difference and lending support to families touched by cancer. And, throughout the U.S., medical practices, hospitals, and cancer advocacy programs are using the film to support their programs, too. (To keep our program goals alive, please keep in mind we do need to charge licensing fees for professional use of the film by organizations, libraries, and large groups.)

National promotional campaign coming in April
We hope to announce major news about upcoming broadcasts around the U.S. So, we've put our national PR launch on hold, but just for a few weeks. Stay tuned!

Events, awards and media coverage
Wow, what a month! We won Best Documentary at the prestigious Detroit Independent Film Festival, where 235 films from 16 nations were entered. Detroit's ABC affiliate, WXYZ, did a terrific live in-studio interview with me and film co-star and fellow survivor, Ryan Koehn. From 235 films entered from 16 nations, Not As I Pictured was one of two top award winners at the Detroit Independent Film Festival, winning Best Documentary.

We've had several great articles published recently including Diane Chun's story in the Gainesville Sun. And the Conner Calling radio program did a live one-hour discussion about the film on WUFT-FM.

Our first PBS affiliate broadcasts aired on WUFT-TV, and WLUF-TV in Gainesville.

Last month we mentioned winning a Best of Show for Public Service Campaign in the first round of the American Advertising Federation ADDY Awards. Now, we've learned we won the Regionals, too, with a hard to get Silver Award. Wish us luck in the Nationals!
